Lincoln University

Lincoln University is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian university based in Oakland, California. Dr. Benjamin Franklin Lickey with his wife Susan founded the university in San Francisco in 1919 to provide a means of higher education for returning veterans after the First World War and other working adults by offering evening classes for part-time students. Named to honor the life, work, and values of President Abraham Lincoln, it was chartered under the laws of California in 1926 and its nonprofit status was recognized by the Internal Revenue Service in 1950. The university’s avowed aim to create an interracial and intercultural learning environment is reflected in its student body and staff who are truly international in origin and outlook. The campus is a microcosm of the twenty-first century’s global community. In recent years the education of its American-born students has been enriched by the enrollment of students from more than forty different nations. The university seeks further to distinguish itself through the attention paid to the individual student and that student’s unique needs and interests. A Master of Business Administration degree is currently offered in addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and Bachelor of Science degrees in computer science and the administration of criminal justice. The bachelor’s degree programs all include a strong general education component. An Associate of Science degree is offered in diagnostic imaging as well as professional certificates in medical assisting, dental assisting, ultrasound technology, and MRI technology. A non-credit Intensive English Program is also offered. The university’s Multidisciplinary Research Center affords talented students an opportunity to collaborate with a diverse team of academic researchers and representatives of the business community to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems. The center conducts an annual student competition for the best business proposals and awards prizes to students who distinguish themselves through the creative analysis of complex business dilemmas. Lincoln University, currently led by Dr. Mikhail Brodsky, president and rector, is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) and the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) of the state of California. The university’s law school became independent in 1993 as the Lincoln Law School of San Jose.
