Lincoln High School is one of two public high schools in the region, serving the city of Manitowoc, parts of southern Two Rivers, Wisconsin and its immediate suburbs since its construction in 1923. The school, which was designed by Jens Jensen, is located on Roeff's Hill alongside scenic Lake Michigan. The gothic-style building occupies 19 acres on the south side of the city.

History

Since its completion, there have been 8 renovations or additions to the school. They began in 1930 with the original pool addition. The West Wing and third floor were added in 1942, followed by a first-floor library wing, a music wing, and a cafeteria wing in 1955. In 1956 the auditorium underwent its first major renovation, and in 1961, a second and third floor were added onto the library. Also built in 1961 was the John F. Kennedy Physical Education Center with a new girls' locker room. The original Technology Education wing was added in 1983. From 1996-2000 a 16.5 million dollar renovation and addition took place. These improvements included the addition of a new gymnasium and a new swimming pool to the J.F.K. Center, a new Science Lab wing, and an overhaul of the auditorium. This most recent expansion added nearly 100,000 square feet to the already large school built in 1923.

Trivia

  • The school prides itself in the elaborate graduation ceremony held every June. Instead of the traditional cap and gown, female graduates wear formal dresses, while male graduates wear tuxedos. Flower girls, comprised of the top twenty female members of the junior class, lead the procession.
  • Lincoln is different from most high schools in the area in that only students in grades 10-12 attend the school, totaling about 1,600 students. Plans are currently in place to expand the student body to include 9th graders once it begins the International Baccalaureate program in the fall of 2007.
  • School colors are red, white, and black, the school's team name is "The Ships." and the school's mascot is Abraham Lincoln.
