Lewis Porter Jazz pianist, and Director, Master's Program in Jazz History and Research, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ author of books and articles, and best known for his biography of saxophonist John Coltrane published in 1998. Entitled John Coltrane: His Life and Music (University of Michigan Press), the book has been endorsed by Coltrane's son Ravi Coltrane, Dan Morgenstern, Jimmy Heath, Dave Liebman, and many others. Academia
A Ph.D. musicologist at Rutgers University in Newark, Lewis Porter founded and directs since 1997 what was at the time the world's first jazz history program: [1] Undergraduate education at University of Rochester; Master's degrees from Northeastern University and Tufts University; Doctor in Musicology, Brandeis University.
Performance
He performs frequently with many noted artists. He has released two CDs as a leader, "Second Voyage" (04/01/2002) and "Italian Encounter" (09/01/2007), on the Altrisuoni label: www.Altrisuoni.com [2]
Personal life
Porter divorced in 1994, remarried in 2000, and was divorced again at the beginning of 2003. He has two children from his first marriage and lives in Westchester County, New York.
