The county was named after the Hungarian Regent-President and revolutionary leader Lajos Kossuth who went into exile in United States after the defeat of the independent Hungarian forces in the Hungarian war of independence against Austria in 1849. Kossuth visited the U.S. in 1851 where he was greeted enthusiastically and acclaimed as a great orator. Ralph Waldo Emerson greeted him on his arrival at Concord Mills, and he spoke before the Ohio State Legislature on February 16, 1852. Kossuth was the second foreign leader, after Lafayette, to address a joint session of Congress. His personal appearance spawned a fashion craze consisting of a moustache-less beard with a tophat.
