Khan (Nasta`liq: خان, Devanāgarī: ख़ान or ख़ाँ) is a widespread family name. It can have one of several connotations, all related to some extent to the title of Khan. The term is also used as a surname, or almost a suffix by people of Pathan (Pashtun) ethnicity living in Afghanistan, Western Pakistan, and India.[1] It is used as a title by Muslim Rajput tribes, as cited by ancient sources such as the Baburnama [2] and cited below in the famous names section. It is also a family name for people that were bestowed the title of Khan Sahib or Khan Bahadur by the British Raj in modern-day Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. It is also a common surname in South Asian Muslim families, regardless of ancestral relationship to Pathans or to those bestowed with honorary titles. Khan is up near the top of the list of common Pakistani surnames, along with honorary titles of North India such as Patel or Singh.[3]
