Keene is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,003 at the 2000 census. The predominant feature of Keene is Southwestern Adventist University.

Keene is located at 32°23′34″N, 97°19′39″W (32.392860, -97.327501)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km²), of which, 2.8 square miles (7.3 km²) of it is land and 0.35% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,003 people, 1,651 households, and 1,147 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,783.2 people per square mile (687.4/km²). There were 1,772 housing units at an average density of 631.6/sq mi (243.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 74.46% White, 7.06% African American, 0.76% Native American, 2.44% Asian, 2.60% Pacific Islander, 9.33% from other races, and 3.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 25.84% of the population.

There were 1,651 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.29. In the city the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 19.0% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 15.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.7 males. The median income for a household in the city was $34,676, and the median income for a family was $42,269. Males had a median income of $27,625 versus $23,977 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,809. About 6.0% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and 17.8% of those age 65 or over.

Southwestern Adventist University, a private liberal arts university in Keene is currently the only four-year institution of higher learning in Johnson County. Southwestern is affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In the public school system, Keene boasts its own independent school district, KISD, which includes Keene Elementary School, Keene Intermediate School, Keene Junior High School, Alternative Learning Center (Grades 6-12), and Keene High School (Texas). Along with Southwestern in Keene's private school system is Keene Adventist Elementary School and Chisholm Trail Academy.

Parks

The Elisa Carver Park is located in the heart of Keene and includes softball, soccer and tee ball fields, volleyball and basketball courts, a 3/4 mile walking trail, playground and picnic area.
