This article is about the US representative, for the son of President Martin Van Buren see John Van Buren. John Van Buren (May 13, 1799 Kingston, Ulster County, New York - January 16, 1855 Kingston, New York) was a United States Representative from New York. He graduated from Union College in 1818, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Kingston. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1831, was judge of Ulster County from 1836 to 1841. He was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843). While in the House, he was chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State. Afterwards he resumed the practice of law and was district attorney of Ulster County, New York from 1846 to 1850. He was buried at Old Houghtaling Cemetery in Kingston, NY.
