John Hunt (1712-1778) was a Quaker minister from London, England. Between 1738 and 1768, he made frequent voyages between London, Philadelphia and Virginia. In 1769, John Hunt, a widower, emigrated to the province of Pennsylvania with his three children. They settled near Philadelphia at Darby. He married Rachel Tory, a widow, on November 28, 1769. John Hunt and about twenty other prominent Quakers from Philadelphia were exiled by force of arms to Winchester, Virginia. This group became known as the "Virginia Exiles". He died March 31, 1778 at Winchester.[1] John Hunt (1712-1778), who is the subject of this article, has been confused with John Hunt (1711-1729) who was also a Quaker living near Philadelphia but at Moorestown, New Jersey.[2] Another John Hunt (1740-1824) was also a Quaker minister and lived at Moorestown.[3]
