Jiyuan Yu is a moral philosopher noted for his work on virtue ethics. Yu has been a Professor of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo, in Buffalo, New York since 1997. Prior to his professorship, Yu completed a three year post as a research fellow at the University of Oxford, England (1994-1997). His primary areas of research and teaching include Ancient Greek Philosophy (esp. Plato, Aristotle), and Ancient Chinese Philosophy (esp. Classical Confucianism). His work spanning across the fields of Eastern and Western virtue ethics (particularly in harmonizing Aristotelian and Confucian conceptions) is among the most sophisticated and influential work on the subject. He serves on the Editorial Boards of History of Philosophy Quarterly and of World Philosophy. He received the University's Young Investigator Award, and also the College of Arts and Sciences' Excellence in Teaching Award in 2002. He is a 2003-4 Fellow at the National Humanities Center.
