Coordinates: 28°40′13″N, 57°44′13″E Jiroft is a city in Kerman province, Iran. It is located 230 kilometres south of the city of Kerman, and 1,375 kilometres south of Tehran. Its population is 209,746. In the past it was also called Sabzewaran, and on account of it being very fertile land it is famous as Hend-e-Koochak (the little India). Jiroft is located in a vast plain, Halil Rud, on the southern outskirts of the Bariz mountain chain, surrounded by two rivers. The mean elevation of the city is about 650 m above sea level. The weather of the city is very warm in summer and moderate temperature in winter. It is one of the hottest places in Iran and the world, with recorded temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) in September, 1933. The remains of the old town of Jiroft are now only a kilometre away from the current city. The name "Jiroft" has recently become well known in archeological circles, since Iran's Cultural Organisation announced the discovery of a millennia-old city buried near Jiroft (Jiroft civilization).
