Jimmy Hood (born 16 May 1948, Lesmahagow) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He is a Labour member of Parliament, and represented Clydesdale until 2005, when he was elected to represent the new constituency of Lanark and Hamilton East. He was first elected in 1987. He was educated at the Lesmahagow High School, the Motherwell Technical College and University of Nottingham. He worked for 23 years as a mining engineer from 1964, the year he joined the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). He became a NUM trade union official in 1973. During the Miners' Strike of 1984-1985 he led the striking Nottinghamshire miners. In 1979 he was elected as a councillor to the Newark and Sherwood District Council and served until his election to Westminster. He has remained a backbencher throughout his parliamentary career, serving on various select committees, including the Defence 1997-2001. He has been married to Marion McCleary since 1967 and they have a son and a daughter and two grandchildren. He suffered a heart attack in 1998.[1]
