The Japan Foundation (国際交流基金 Kokusai Kōryū Kikin?) was established in 1972 by an Act of the Japanese Diet as a special legal entity to undertake international dissemination of Japanese culture, and became an independent administrative institution under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Ministry of Japan on October 1, 2003 under the "Independent Administrative Institution Japan Foundation Law".[1]. The Japan Foundation aims towards comprehensive and effective development of its international cultural exchange programs in four categories[2]:

  • Promotion of cultural and arts exchange
  • Promotion of overseas Japanese language education and intellectual exchange (The JLPT exam)
  • Promotion of overseas Japanese studies and intellectual exchange
  • Support of collection and provision of international exchange information and international cultural exchange standard bearers.

Japan Foundations worldwide

The Japan Foundation is headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo and has a subsidiary office in Kyoto. There are also two domestic Japanese-Language Institutes in Saitama and Tajiri, Osaka. Internationally, the Japan Foundation maintains 19 overseas branches in 18 countries[3]. There are Japan Foundation branches in Seoul, Beijing, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi, Sydney, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, São Paulo, Rome, London, Cologne, Paris, Budapest and Cairo; there is also a Southeast-Asian bureau in Bangkok.
