Sir James Ormonde (c. 1418 – 1497) was the son of John Butler, 6th Earl of Ormonde, and Princess Margret of Thormond. His brothers were John Ormond, esq. of Alfreton, England, and Sir William Butler of Gloucestershire, England. James and his brother John were born in Derbyshire, England. They were the grandsons of an Irish King. He was raised in England, but fought for what he regarded as Irish rights. He was knighted in 1493 by King Henry VII of England, for services in battle for the Tudor cause. He held lands in Wiltshire, England. The year before his murder, he was made an Irish Lord by King Henry VII. James was made Lord Treasurer of Ireland in 1492 by Henry VII; he served until 1494. James was hailed as Earl of Ormonde by the Irish, but never attained that title as he was murdered by Piers Butler in 1497 which removed his claim to that Earldom.
