Iphitus is the name of four characters in Greek mythology. 1. Iphitus, the son of Eurytus, king of Oechalia. When Heracles won Iole in an archery contest, he was accused of stealing Eurytus' cattle. Iphitus took Heracles part against his father; but Heracles later killed him in a fit of madness. Iphitus had met Heracles in Messenia during the search for the cattle, and as a result of their friendship gave him his father Eurytus' bow. 2. Iphitus, son of Naubolus and king of Phocis. He entertained Jason when he consulted the Delphic Oracle and later joined the Argonauts. His sons Schedius and Epistrophus led the Phocians in the Trojan war. 3. Iphitus was an Elean, killed by Copreus. 4. Iphitus, king of Elis, who restored the Olympic Games after the Dorian invasion.
