The International Register of Shipping or IS was established in 1993, and is an independent classification society which provides classification, certification, verification and advisory services. The International Register of Shipping also offers consulting services well suited for the shipping and offshore industry. The International Register of Shipping is a relatively small classification society. It is not a member of either the International Association of Classification Societies or the European Maritime Safety Agency. The International Register of Shipping advertises a worldwide network of surveyors, however most of these survey offices are not exlusive to IS; they are subcontracted by the company and not directly employed by IS. The organization's head office is located in Miami, Florida.
