Infernal is a Danish dance band, which made their national debut in 1997 with the release of the "Sorti de L'enfer" single. They are currently the biggest and most famous Danish dance band in the world. Initially they were known for their experimental song style and blend of unusual music genres and club music. In recent years they have turned to more songwriting and they have gone from club to dance pop. Their most successful single was "From Paris to Berlin," a version of which was released in the UK as "From London to Berlin", promoting England's place in the 2006 Football World Cup in addition to the original single.

History

Infernal initially consisted of Lina Rafn, Paw Lagermann and Søren Haahr, but Søren left the group in 2000. They developed an experimental song style and successful blend of unusual music genres and club music. An example of this is their smashhit "Kalinka" which is founded on the Russian Drobushki folk melody.

From Paris to Berlin

In 2004, their third studio album From Paris to Berlin was released, the title track of which has become their biggest international hit so far, becoming a chart hit all over the world. "From Paris to Berlin" is the only song released by a Danish act nominated at the Nordic Music Awards 2005 giving Infernal yet another triumph. The Nordic Music Awards is the biggest music event in Scandinavia broadcast to viewers in Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway. Nominations are based on sales figures in all four countries; however, the audience and the viewers are the ones to determine who will take home the prestigious statuettes.

Ahead of the World Cup 2006, "From Paris to Berlin" has been re-recorded for English fans with lyrics celebrating the English football squad with the title "From London to Berlin". However, the song was withdrawn from radio airplay and TV following England's knockout from the World Cup. In May 2006, From Paris to Berlin reached #2 in the UK charts and remained in the top five for seven weeks. The following single after "From Paris to Berlin" in the UK was "Self Control", a cover by Laura Branigan. However, it wasn't released in Spain, due to a similar version being released by Spanish singer Soraya Arnelas. So, there they released Ten Miles, which got to Number 1 there, but it has yet to be released anywhere else. However, Self Control was released on the November 6th 2006 and peaked at number 18 in the UK and number 14 in Ireland. They've chosen "I Won't Be Crying" as the third single in Europe (with a sample from the Depeche Mode single Strangelove), from the UK edition of the From Paris to Berlin album, which was released on May 7, 2007.[1] However, the single didn't gain a lot of airplay in the UK, but was a moderate hit in Europe and became the band's most watched video on YouTube. The next single to be released in the UK is Ten Miles, a slow melodic ballad also from their From Paris To Berlin album. The song is becoming an unexpected hit for the duo, surpassing the peak of I Won't Be Crying in Europe. Not yet well-known in the United States of America, Infernal is starting to break out of its shell and is slowly becoming more successful outside Europe, with the album being added on the US Itunes and receiving great reviews.[2]. The band will start working on their new album in May 2008.
