Known formerly as Church Hulme, Holmes Chapel is a village in central Cheshire, in Congleton borough. Population (2001 census): 5,669. It is located at the junction of the A50 and A54, close to the M6 motorway. According to the Index of Deprivation, the village ranks as the 18th least deprived ward in the United Kingdom (out of 8,414). Holmes Chapel railway station has services to Manchester and Crewe, making it a good base for commuting. Swettenham Meadows nature reserve lies 2.5 miles (4 km) east of the village and Goostrey lies to the north. The village has a number of public houses including The George and Dragon, The Red Lion, The Swan and a wine bar. There is also a shopping precinct with a supermarket, clothes shop, Indian restaurant, off licence, betting shop, estate agents, a chemist and a library, which has recently had an extension. The village has one secondary school, Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School.
