Holbrook is a census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 27,512 at the 2000 Census.

Geography

Holbrook is located at 40°47′59″N, 73°4′32″W (40.799650, -73.075617)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.8 square miles (17.7 km²), all land. Home to Sachem Public Library.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 27,512 people, 9,019 households, and 7,350 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,032.5 per square mile (1,557.5/km²). There were 9,157 housing units at an average density of 1,342.2/sq mi (518.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.95% White, 1.32% African American, 0.08% Native American, 2.87% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.87% of the population. There were 9,019 households out of which 39.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.8% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% were non-families. 14.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was 3.38. In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $72,801, and the median income for a family was $76,349. Males had a median income of $50,040 versus $33,651 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,863. About 2.5% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.6% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.

Government

Holbrook is located in both the Towns of Islip and Brookhaven, divided by the rail tracks of the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. Despite this variation in town government, the majority of Holbrook is located within the Town of Islip and completely within the Sachem School District, which is independent of town borders. Fire & ambulance service is provided by the Holbrook Volunteer Fire Department, operating out of 3 stations in the town. Headquarters is located at 390 Terry Blvd, Sub-Station 1 is located on Church St west of Broadway Ave & Sub-Station 2 is located on Patchogue-Holbrook Rd & Greenbelt Pkwy. The Fire Department maintains a 24/7/365 paid dispatch and Paramedic First Responder service.

Education

Holbrook is within the Sachem School District. There are three elementary schools in Holbrook: Grundy Elementary, Nokomis Elementary, and Merrimac Elementary. One of the four middle schools within Sachem are in Holbrook: Seneca Middle School Holbrook residents attend either Sachem High School North or Sachem High School East, depending on which section of Holbrook they live in.
