Hokkaido International Airlines (北海道国際航空株式会社 Hokkaidō Kokusai Kōkū Kabushiki-gaisha?), also known as Air Do (エア・ドゥ Ea Du?) is a Japanese low-cost airline. Based in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, it operates between Tokyo and cities in Hokkaidō. Its main base is Tokyo International Airport in Ōta, Tokyo [1].

History

The airline was established in 1996 and started operations in December 1998. The brainchild of a successful poultry farmer in Hokkaidō, it is owned by Mizuho Financial Group (96.07%) and individual investors (3.93%). It has 565 employees (at March 2007)[1]. Air Do was one of Japan's first low-cost airlines. It originally competed with Japan's major domestic carriers (All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Japan Air System), who lowered their fares to Air Do's level without seriously compromising corporate profits. After two years of losses, the airline entered a code-sharing agreement with ANA, and now has the same general fare structure as the majors.
