"History" is a song by British rock band The Verve, and is featured on their second album, A Northern Soul. It was released 18 September 1995 as the third and final single from the album charting at #24 in the UK Singles Chart (see 1995 in British music). The song is notable for being released after the band's sudden first break up (ironically the sign on the single cover reads 'all farewells should be sudden'), and also for being the first song by the group to feature a string accompaniment. This formula would later prove to be commercially successful for Urban Hymns (1997) singles such as "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "The Drugs Don't Work", and "Lucky Man". The lyrics of the first section of the song are based on the first two stanzas of William Blake's poem, London. The clapping featured on History was made by Liam Gallagher. The video shows a compilation of clips from The Verve's previous videos from 1992-1995.
