Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia (Finnish: Helsingin ammattikorkeakoulu Stadia) is a multidisciplinary institution of higher education, one of the biggest and the most attractive polytechnic in Finland in 2005. Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia offers students an international learning environment with a wide variety of higher education level studies. All this in Finland’s capital Helsinki, which together with its surroundings is at present the most rapidly progressing area in Finland. Helsinki Polytechnic was established in 1996 by merging eight existing institutions of higher education maintained by the City of Helsinki. The number of full-time students is around 9 500 and more than 32 Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes are available. Helsinki Polytechnic adopted the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) at the beginning of the academic year 2005 - 2006. In Stadia it is possible to study Nursing, Social Services, Industrial Management and Information Technology in English. All the other degree programmes are taught in Finnish. The activities of Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia are situated in 16 campuses in the city and the faculties run their programmes quite independently within the common frames, aims and regulations. Stadia promotes a learning environment that encourages international cooperation and cultural awareness through teacher and student exchanges and projects in several countries. Stadia takes part in various teacher and student exchange and student trainee programmes e.g. within the framework of Socrates programme / Erasmus programme, Leonardo da Vinci programme, and Nordplus programme. Every year Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia welcomes a number of foreign exchange students and trainees. In 2005, almost 160 students arrived from various countries, including e.g. Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. In the same year, the number of outgoing students through different exchange and trainee programmes and bilateral agreements was nearly 400. In 2005, about 140 teachers or experts from Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia took part in staff exchange, and Helsinki Polytechnic welcomed over 60 teachers of their international counterparts.
