Hauptbahnhof is the German term for "central railway station", and is used to designate the principal passenger railway station of major towns and cities which have multiple stations. In Germany and Austria the word is abbreviated to "Hbf" in timetables, while the equivalent abbreviation in Switzerland is "HB", e.g. Berlin Hbf, Innsbruck Hbf, Zürich HB. The only German city to contain two Hauptbahnhöfe within the city limits is Mönchengladbach, which has Mönchengladbach Hbf and Rheydt Hbf following the unification of the two towns. Many neighbouring countries similarly indicate their towns' main railway station, e.g. hlavní nádraží (abbreviated hl. n.) in Czech, Centraal Station (abbreviated CS) in Dutch, Główny in Polish, Főpályaudvar (abbreviated főpu.) in Hungarian, and Hovedbanegård in Danish.
