Harrison is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,315 at the 2000 census.

History

Harrison was Incorporated as a town on March 8, 1805 from portions of Otisfield and Bridgton. The town was named after Harrison Gray Otis, who was a landowner.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.9 square miles (87.7 km²), of which, 33.0 square miles (85.5 km²) of it is land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²) of it (2.45%) is water. The Maine-State routes that cross through Harrison are 117 and 35. Harrison borders the towns of Bridgton to its west, Waterford and Norway to its north, Otisfield to its east, and Naples to its south.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,315 people, 920 households, and 662 families residing in the town. The population density was 70.1 people per square mile (27.1/km²). There were 1,430 housing units at an average density of 43.3/sq mi (16.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.79% White, 0.52% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 0.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.52% of the population. There were 920 households out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.90. In the town the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.0 males. The median income for a household in the town was $35,478, and the median income for a family was $42,159. Males had a median income of $30,726 versus $22,311 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,898. About 6.9% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.8% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.

Historical Features

Harrison is the location of Scribner's Mill, a saw mill built in 1847 and worked continuously until 1962. Scribner's Mill Preservation, Inc., seeks to restore the mill to full functionality as a museum. It is also home to Deertrees Theater, a local culteral arts center opened in the 1930's.
