Happenstance is the eighth episode in the seventh season of the popular American crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, set in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Summary

The CSIs investigate the death of two identical twins within a two hour time frame, on opposite sides of town. When the team discovers that the twins knew nothing of each other, they begin to wonder if the two cases are connected, or just a very bizarre coincidence. Catherine is sure they are connected whilst Grissom challenges her on it. They bet one dollar on it. We first follow the investigation into Amanda's death. Amanda, a wife and mother, is found shot outside the dry cleaners. The team initially believe the twins know each other, based on the similarities between the two women. The investigation leads them to suspect first the husband then the nurse stalking her husband. Looking into the twins' past, they discover that their mother was locked up for some unspecified crime against them when they were little. Nick and Detective Curtis visit the mother and suspicion falls to her daughter when cigarette butts are found near the house, although she is eventually ruled out. The focus then shifts to Jill's death. She is found hung in her house, apparently a suicide. The investigation leads to her shrink who, it turns out, is having a relationship with her "to help her". However the DNA evidence discounts him. Postmortem bruising around Jill's neck reveals she was murdered. During a search of her house, Warrick notices her laptop missing. As they search her office, a memory stick is found hidden in her desk. It contains photos an award-winning journalist at her paper has used to fake photographs. Upon interviewing the journalist, a match is made with his DNA to her noose and it is revealed that in his attempt to kill her, he killed her twin by accident. In the end, Catherine tears a dollar bill in half and gives one of the halves to Grissom, concluding that they were both right about the connectedness of the murders.
