History

Formerly a rural area, it was once known as Horse Cove, because local residents used part of it to hide their horses to prevent them being seized by the Union Army during the Civil War. It later was named Berkeley and Owens Cross Roads, predominantly African-American communities in Madison County. The land was annexed to Huntsville and many families were forced out to make room for higher income white residents. It was renamed Hampton Cove by a real estate developer. Development on Hampton Cove began in 1987, in a partnership between John Hays and Jeff Enfinger. Hays, who owned thousands of acres just over Monte Sano, donated thousands of acres for free to develop a golf course and a sewage treatment plant. The remaining land became highly valuable due to the utilities and the Robert Trent Jones golf courses there, and the increased value of the land allowed for the implementation of a design that has won many national awards.

Schools

Hampton Cove is serviced by one school complex, hosting both Hampton Cove Elementary and Hampton Cove Middle schools. The schools provide a kindergarten through Eighth grade education. Both schools fall within the Huntsville City Schools system.

Golf

Hampton Cove also hosts one of ten stops on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The three-course, 54-hole facility is open year-round.Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail
