Hallam FM is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. Its output is principally contemporary pop and dance music. It is owned by EMAP and is part of their Big City Network of stations. The station is based in Sheffield

History
Launched on the October 1st 1974, Hallam FM broadcasts on three frequencies to a potential audience of 1.3 million. The station was formerly known as Radio Hallam. After a merger with Pennine Radio, the station became part of the Yorkshire Radio Network, until the network was bought by the Metro Radio group in 1989. A the Metro Radio group was bought by Emap, Hallam FM also became part of the big city network.
Broadcasting
It is the most listened to radio station in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands according to the latest RAJAR statistics; its main competitors are BBC Radio 1, Galaxy Yorkshire & Peak FM. Other local competing stations include; BBC Radio Sheffield, Real Radio, Rotherfm, Dearne FM & Trax FM. It has recently modified its music policy in a reversal of its previous policy to include some older influences relating to its thirty year history. The station broadcasts on analogue frequencies on 97.4 FM (Tapton Hill), 103.4 FM (Clifton, near the M18) and 102.9 FM (Ardsley) in Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley respectively. Almost the whole region is covered on 103.4 FM. DAB is provided by the EMAP Digital South Yorkshire multiplex. Hallam FM's live broadcast can also be listened to from the website.
Recent Changes
In April 2007, Phoneboy's weekday evening show was brought to an end, and a networked show from Manchester was introduced, "In Demand with Rich & Luce". At the same time, Nick Margerrison's late show also ended, and "The Confessional" began, a mostly talk-based show, broadcast from Hallam's studios but also shared with sister Yorkshire station's 96.3 Radio Aire and 96.9 Viking FM.
