Guy Kurtz Bard (October 24, 1895-November 23, 1953) — also known as Guy K. Bard — was a Judge of U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1939 until 1952 when he resigned to be the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. Judge Bard was born in Lincoln, Pennsylvania and educated at Franklin and Marshall College (A.B. 1916) and the University of Penssylvania School of Law (LL.B. 1922) and served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a lawyer and served as chair of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Democratic Party, from 1925 to 1934; candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania in 1930; and delegate to the 1932 Democratic National Convention from Pennsylvania. He became U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1937 and Pennsylvania state attorney general, 1938-39. He was appointed by Franklin D. Roosevelt to the U.S. District Court in December 1939 to fill a seat vacated by Oliver B. Dickinson. He was unsuccessful in his run for the U.S. Senate in 1952. He was a member of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Delta Theta Phi, and Xi Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau at Franklin and Marshall. Judge Bard is interred at Fairview Cemetery, Denver, Pa. A Guy Kurtz Bard Award is given at Millersville University to a senior political science major in even-numbered years and to a senior history major in odd-numbered years for outstanding ability in political science and history.
