Good Girl Gone Bad is the third studio album by singer Rihanna, which was released on June 4 2007 in most European countries and on June 5 2007 in the United States. The album has had more success than her previous two and is still highly active on worldwide charts. To date, the album has sold more than 3.5 million albums worlwide, and has earned a platinum certification in the United States. Good Girl Gone Bad was the 13th best selling album of 2007. Praised by critics with positive reviews, the album received 6 Grammy Award nominations.

Production and theme

Folllowing her second studio album, A Girl Like Me (2006), Rihanna started writing and recording for her new effort early in 2007. Rihanna spent the week of Grammys writing songs for the follow-up with her Def Jam labelmate singer-songwriter Ne-Yo, who co-wrote her ballad-driven "Unfaithful," whom she had vocal lessons for the album.^[1] In addition to him, she collaborated with Evan and Carl, record producer Sean Garrett and again with Norwegian production team Stargate who had previous work with Rihanna and who co-wrote Beyoncé Knowles’ number single "Irreplaceable."^[1] Rihanna also booked Timbaland and Will.I.Am in the studio to work with her.^[1] Most of the album's track were recorded in Los Angeles, California, and, parallel to the recording sessions of her second studio album, A Girl Like Me, Rihanna was almost done recording late in February 2007.^[1] The genre of the new album sticks to Rihanna's previous works that is mostly uptempos. It followed her club-natured melodies and, like its predecessor, it includes soul and ballads. In an interview, Rihanna said, "You feel different every album, and [at] this stage I feel like I want to do a lot of uptempo [songs]. I want to keep people dancing but still be soulful at the same time."^[1] Rihanna worked with Timbaland on three songs in the album. Justin Timberlake co-wrote and provides background vocals on "Rehab".^[2] In interviews, many have questioned the meaning and reasoning of the album title. During an interview on UK radio station Capital FM, Rihanna explains:

"Bad is not sleazy. Bad has its own term to every individual and in my case it just means I've gotten a little rebellious on the album, broken out of my shell and I'm taking risks... Michael Jackson "bad" kind of way.^[3]

The album title reflects the difference between the old and new Rihanna. She says

"Bad means cool, bad means funky, bad means having an attitude, bad means being edgy. This album is definitely a great representation of who I am now, and where I am in my career.^[4]

Ne-Yo, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland are collaborators on the album. Rihanna also worked with producer, Producing Prodigy, who is a protégé of producer Kon Artis on Sell me Candy. The United Kingdom edition of the album was released with a digipack bonus CD of remixes and in Australia it is also being sold.

Promotion

Appearances

Rihanna has been making formal appearances around the UK. She has also performed three of her new songs in Preston. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "Shut Up and Drive" and "Breakin' Dishes". Rihanna, most notably, performed "Umbrella" at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. she also performed her hit song "Hate That I Love You" at the 2007 American Music Awards of 2007.

Good Girl Gone Bad Tour

Rihanna embarked on a success of her role as a supporting act for the Pussycat Dolls on tour in 2006. The tour started on September 15, three months after the release of the album. The tour, which consists of three legs with 40 shows, is scheduled to end on February 24, 2008. The first leg began in Canada which consisted of eleven shows across the country sharing with Akon (Canada only) and later passing through Europe. The limited USA leg began in October. The tour is said to have special guests, the winners of BBC's primetime show DanceX, supporting her UK leg of the tour, although the main support for the UK Tour will be R&B singer Ciara. In Ireland a new Irish R&B act called Caramel Luv was the concert's support. Rihanna held a concert in Belgrade Arena in Belgrade. The estimated number of visitors was more than 20,000. In Battenberg Square, Sofia, over 50,000 people attended the concert, which was free.^[5] On December 6, 2007 a live DVD of the tour was shot in Manchester, England. The DVD was recorded at the M.E.N. Arena and is scheduled to release in early 2008. Rihanna cancelled the concert at Nottingham Arena, on 9 December 2007, just one hour before she was due to perform, due to illness and also cancelled the concert at the NEC Birmingham due on 10 December. The Birmingham show was rescheduled for 18 December.

Singles

There have been three main singles released from Good Girl Gone Bad. The first being "Umbrella" followed by the single "Shut Up and Drive". The unofficial third single is "Don't Stop the Music" and the third official single is a duet with Ne-Yo called "Hate That I Love You", which has so far peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Rihanna yet another top ten single. During her co-hosting in MTV's TRL on October 11 2007 she mentioned that her fourth US single (fifth total) would be either "Breakin' Dishes", "Rehab" or "Good Girl Gone Bad". According to Billboard, the next single will be "Breakin' Dishes", which entered the Hot Dance Club Play chart at No. 40 on November 29, 2007.^[6] It has so far peaked at No. 14 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play. Recently on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, it has been announced that the new official U.S. single is "Rehab" and the video is being shot in a few weeks. "Breakin' Dishes" is set to be the Club Only Single.

Chart performance

The first single from the album, "Umbrella", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the issue date June 9, 2007. It is the second lead single of an album by Rihanna to reach number one in the U.S, after "SOS" from A Girl like Me. "Umbrella" also hit the top spot in the UK Singles Chart for ten consecutive weeks, the longest running chart topper in a decade.^[7] On the issue date June 23, 2007, Good Girl Gone Bad entered the U.S. Billboard 200 at number two with 162,000 copies sold in its first week. Epiphany by T-Pain snagged the number one spot away from Good Girl Gone Bad, selling just 8,600 more copies. This is Rihanna's best opening week album sales to date, significantly improving on the 68,000 first week sales of Music of the Sun and the 115,000 first week sales of A Girl Like Me. In the United Kingdom the album sold 53,000 copies in its first week, debuted at number one, and so far has sold over 557,000 copies, earning Platinum certification. The album has sold over 1 million copies in the U.S. and more than 3.5 million copies worldwide.

Critical Reception

Good Girl Gone Bad received generally positive reviews from critics.

• Andy Kellman of All Music Guide said that "From beginning to end, Good Girl Gone Bad is as pop as pop gets in 2007, each one of its 12 songs a potential hit in some territory" ^[8].
• For Billboard Magazine Clover Hope said "Ring the Alarm," Beyoncé's disgruntled-female anthem of 2006, was designed to take the normally tame vocalist out of her comfort zone and reveal her aggression. Rihanna's third album, "Good Girl Gone Bad," is like that times 10" ^[9].
• Kelefa Sanneh of New York Times stated that "This CD sounds as if it were scientifically engineered to deliver hits. “Good Girl Gone Bad" should secure her place on pop music’s A-list"^[10].
• Pitchfork Media states "An unexpectedly varied and satisfying listen"^[11].
• Neil Drumming of Entertainment Weekly said that "Rihanna works well with edgier and wittier verse than on her two previous albums" ^[12].

Good Girl Gone Bad has reached the position of two on the Billboard Album Top 200 ^[13]. The album has also reached platinum status in the US. The album received 6 Grammy Award nominations:Record of the Year, Grammy Award for Best R&B Song, Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for Hate That I Love You), Grammy Award for Song of the Year, Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for Umbrella (song) and Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for Don't Stop the Music (Rihanna song).
