Glenn Mitchell (sports broadcaster)

Glenn Mitchell is a sports broadcaster and writer for ABC Radio's Grandstand program and is based in Perth. He joined ABC Radio Sport in January 1990 and his voice has become familiar to listeners around Australia with his commentaries on Australian rules football and international and state cricket. At the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, Glenn was the cycling commentator for ABC Radio and at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, he called the cycling as well as the netball gold medal match. He also co-hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. Mitchell covered the 1996 Paralympic Games for ABC TV and commentating cycling and track and field events, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. He has also covered Australian cricket tours overseas, heading to Sri Lanka in 1999 and India in 2001, where he commentated alongside Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle. Along with Jim Maxwell, he is one of the core cricket commentators for the ABC, commentating at many international matches, locally and overseas. He has called several hundred AFL and WAFL Australian Rules football matches on radio and television. As as well as calling football, he has called NBL and WNBL basketball on television and radio. Mitchell is Executive Producer, Sport for ABC Western Australia. Actively involved in sport away from the microphone, Mitchell has held positions on the boards of the Western Australian Sports Federation and the Coaching Federation of Western Australia. Currently, he is on the board of directors for the Western Australia Paralympic Committee. He published a book titled Pursuing Excellence, a biographical history of Western Australia's leading sportswomen in 1998^[1]. He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal by the Governor-General of Australia for his services to sport in November 2000. He is married to longtime Grandstand and Hopman Cup host, Karen Tighe, also of the ABC.
