In the heart of downtown St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, George Street is closed to traffic all evening and most of the business day (only being open from 8:00am until noon, to allow bars to restock their goods) to make way for pedestrian bar goers. It is understood by locals and those who choose its nightlife as a destination to have the most pubs per square foot of any street in North America, as well as having some of the latest bar goers in Canada. It is not rare to be heading downtown to a bar at 3, 4, 5 or even 6 in the morning. Although alcohol may not be served at this time, many bars in the downtown area are just starting to fill up. Nightlife can start very late in St.John's. The street is home to an annual Mardi Gras celebration in October. However, the largest celebration on George Street is the six-night George Street Festival which occurs in early August and typically concludes on the Tuesday night before the Royal St. John's Regatta, which is set for the first Wednesday in August. George Street was once six blocks long, but with the construction of the St. John's Convention Centre, which sits directly on top of what used to be roughly the middle of the street, the street became "George Street" and "George Street West". As such, George Street proper is now only two blocks long. George Street West is home to a number of businesses, residences and a church (and no bars or pubs), while George Street itself is the predominant home of St. John's' nightlife.
