Gazi or sometimes Gazio (Greek Γάζι(ο)), Crete is a municipality 6 km west of Heraklion, on the north coast of Crete. Since 1999, it has included the area of the former Local Authorities of Gazi (including Kalessa, merged in 1994), Ahlada, Rodia, and Fodele. Its area is 95.8 km² and its population in the 1991 census was 8,133; it has grown rapidly since then. By the 2001 census it had 13,581 inhabitants and was the seventh-largest municipality on Crete. It borders the Municipalities of Heraklion, Kroussonas, Tylissos, and Gorgolayni, and Rethymno Prefecture, and the National Highway passes through it, along the coast. Its beach, Ammoudara (Αμμουδάρα), is the longest near Iraklion, and has a series of tourist hotels, rental apartments, restaurants, and so on. The Gazi River (Gazanos Potamos) and the brackish spring and river Almyros flow through Gazi. Villages of Gazi municipality, by former local authority:

  • Gazi (28.2 km²): Gazi, Agia Marina, Agios Dimitrios, Agios Panteleimon, Ammoudara, Council-Houses, Kavrochori, Kefalogiannis, Koluvas, 62 Martyres, Xiropotamos, Kalessa.
  • Rodia (21.6 km²): Rodia/Rogdia, Kapetanaki Metochi, Linoperamata, Pantanassa, Palaiokastro/Paleokastro, Savatiana Monastery.
  • Fodele (24.3 km²): Fodele/Fodhele, Agios Panteleimon Monastery, Fodele beach.
  • Achlada (21.6 km²): Achlada, Agia Pelagia, Lygaria, Made.

Fodele is claimed as the birthplace of El Greco, but this is disputed. The ruins of a Venetian castle are at Palaiokastro (literally 'old castle'). Agia Pelagia is a seaside resort village.
