Garth Slater was a character in the now-defunct American soap opera Loving. He was played by actor John Cunningham. This role reunited him, if for a short while, with his former Search for Tomorrow co-star, Ann Williams. (He played Wade Collins, who was married to Stu Bergman's daughter, Janet Bergman Collins; and she played Eunice Gardner Wyatt, the sister of lead character, Joanne Gardner.)

Despicable Dean and Daddy

Garth was a very unscrupulous college Dean at Alden University in the fictional community of Corinth, Pennsylvania. At one point in time, he was considered to be a candidate for the University's presidency, but was passed over for that post, by Alden family in-law, Roger Forbes. Perhaps, therein lies his resentment, because he lost out on the job due to nepotism. His home life was no better than his work life. He was married to alcoholic June Slater and had a daughter named Lily, who was a high school senior. When Lily began seeing University student, Jack Forbes, the son of his new boss, Roger Forbes, Garth was displeased. Since Garth was also interested. . . . in Lily. Garth was involved in an incestuous relationship with his own daughter, and kept June in the dark about it by plying her with drugs and booze. This situation shattered Lily's psyche and she split into two personalities, the regular Lily and then Lily #2, a sassy and flirtatious type. However, in one of her more lucid moments, June caught Garth in the act, and shot him dead for it. Unfortunately, Jack Forbes was arrested and charged with his murder, since he had the most to gain from killing Garth, but during the trial, June stood up and blurted out in open court that she had killed her monstrous husband. She had blacked out the memory of the murder to help save Lily. June wasn't charged, and she and her daughter left Corinth to rebuild their lives.
