Synopsis

The Halliwell sisters are threatened by a unique demon who appears only every one thousand, three hundred years to feed on the fears of witches for his survival. He literally scares his victims to death using their greatest inner fear on themselves. In a supernatural twist of fate, just as Prue and Phoebe are close to their own fearful deaths, they are suddenly able to face their own fears with the help of the spirit of their mother and her timely words of wisdom. Prue must face her fear of drowning, while Phoebe must face her fear of losing a sister. Meanwhile, Piper faces her own fear of relationships that begin on the dreadful day of Friday the 13th when a handsome stranger walks into her life and Phoebe gets a new job but her boss is cheating on her husband and asks her to lie if he calls.

Book of Shadows

Enemies

  • Barbas: The Demon of Fear, also known as Barbas, appears on Earth once every one thousand, three hundred years on a Friday the 13th for twenty four hours. His appearance is attributed to the universal convergence of negative energies as described in astrological charts. He derives his life force by feeding off the fears of witches. If he can kill 13 unmarried, single female witches before the stroke of midnight on the 13th he will be able to break free from his eternal bonds and walk the Earth for eternity. A witch's only defense is to identify and then release her greatest fear. Do not rely on your wicca powers for defense for in the face of your greatest fear, those powers are paralyzed. To let go of your fear, trust in the greatest of all powers: Love.

Spells

  • To Dispel the Effects of Superstitions: Sage so fair from far and wide, take my troubles and brush them aside.

Trivia

  • The episode title is a play on words to the movie From Here to Eternity.
  • The main plot of both storylines in this episode center on Friday the 13th. This episode is actually the 13th episode to be made in the series.
  • The character of Barbas, who was supposed to only appear every thirteen hundred years, was originally supposed to make his only appearance in this episode. He proved to be so popular among fans that he actually appeared six more times.
  • When Barbas drowns Prue in the pool, he says "Nice coat." This is very similar to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer season one episode Prophecy Girl, in which The Master drowns Buffy in a pool of sewer water and says "By the way. I like your dress."
  • When Barbas tried to drown Prue in the shower, the water filled up very high, but when Prue got out of the shower after Andy and Darryl came, the towel she pulled from the shower was dry. Also, we can clearly see the bottles moving in the water. After the water's gone, they are all in the right places, like if Prue put them all back while she was almost drown.
  • The spirit of Patty Halliwell appears in this episode to help Prue but we do not see her fully until the episode That '70s Episode, also the woman playing Patty is not Finola Hughes, it is played by a different actress. A similar event occurred in A Witch's Tail (Part 2) where Patty saves Piper from drowning too.
  • It's unknown how Patty knew about Barbas, if she read it from somewhere or if she met him. She couldn't have met him because Barbas was supposed to only appear every thirteen hundred years. This restriction was lifted in later episodes, however when this episode was made it was supposed to be his only appearance. Also if Patty had met him before Barbas would have remembered fighting a Halliwell. It is Often excepted that Patty may have seen a premonition of Barbas, not that she had faced him before.
  • Signs for SWA Properties, where Phoebe works in this episode, can be seen throughout subsequent episodes, including:
Witch Trial, How to Make a Quilt Out of Americans,Valhalley of the Dolls (Part 2).
  • Phoebe gets a new car, a misty blue 1998 Volvo S70.
  • The phone number for SWA properties as shown on the Caller ID is 555-1212. This is the number for U.S. Directory Assistance.
  • In this episode we see Barbas with a teleportation that looks like smoke later we see him with one that looks like fire.
  • The part where it shows Tanjella's dead body after Barbas turned her greatest fear against her is cut out on Living TV.
