Free Ride is a song written by Dan Hartman and performed by the The Edgar Winter Group. The single was a top 20 US hit in 1973. The song is also in the movies Air America and Dazed and Confused. It was also covered by the Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline on their 1996 album Bloom. It was also in the 1995 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie and in the 1998 Jack Frost (1998 film) movie. On February 20, 2007, American Idol contestant Rudy Cardenas opened season 6 of the television show by performing a version of Free Ride. The performance was met with less than enthusiastic reviews from the show's judges, and Rudy was one of the first contestants to be cut from the competition. A variation of the song is also used in advertising by New Zealand digital TV provider Freeview.
