Franz (pronounced [fræns]) is an unincorporated community in central Ontario, Canada, located on Hobon Lake four miles (six kilometres) long, 130 miles (209 kilometres) north of Sault Ste. Marie. Franz is located 65 kilometres (40 miles) from Chapleau. In better days, Franz had a booming economy in forestry, transportation, and mining. The original name for this rural community was Hobon. In 1914, the post office's name was changed to Franz, and the CPR, formerly ACR (Algoma Central Railway) station name was altered from Hobon to Franz Station. Franz was (re)named after the former Algoma Steel (ACR) executive William Charles Franz, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
