Purpose and Mission: Promoting the Economic Way of Thinking

"The mission of the Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) is to introduce young individuals, selected for their leadership potential, to an economic way of thinking about national and international issues, and to promote excellence in economic education by helping teachers of economics become more effective educators." The flagship program of the FTE,Economics for Leaders,(EFL)is designed to promote both goals of the mission. The unique lab-school setting of the week-long,summer residential programs introduces rising high school seniors to the economic way of thinking through their morning interactions with staff and with 30 middle and high-school teachers drawn to the program by their interest in interactive, engaging classroom strategies. 'Student Photo Albums from EFL' [1] In the afternoon sessions, students engage in leadership exercises while the participating secondary teachers continue to work with the FTE economics staff to refine their understanding of economic reasoning and their comfort with hands-on pedagogies. Teacher ''Economics for Leaders'' programs: [2] As are all FTE program materials, the Econoics for Leaders lessons are correlated to the "National Voluntary Content Standards in Economics"[3] and are available, free, on the FTE website. Visitors to the site may also view streaming video of many of the EFL classroom activities.
