Nation

¹ Benten Island is the northernmost point under Japanese control. The northernmost point claimed by Japan is Cape Kamuiwakka (カムイワッカ岬 Kamuiwakka-misaki?), Iturup (Etorofu) Island, Shibetoro, Hokkaidō 45°33′28″N, 148°45′14″E; part of the Northern Territories, currently administrated by Russia.
² The southernmost point open to the public is Cape Takanazaki (高那崎?), Hateruma Island (波照間島 Hateruma-jima?), Taketomi, Okinawa Prefecture 24°02′25″N, 123°47′16″E
³ The easternmost point open to the public is Cape Nosappu (納沙布岬 Nosappu-misaki?), Nemuro, Hokkaidō 43°22′58″N, 145°49′16″E

The four main islands of Japan are Hokkaidō, Honshū, Kyūshū and Shikoku.
