Eve Sheridan, M.D. was a fictional character in the short-lived television sitcom, E/R. She was played by Marcia Strassman in the pilot, and thereafter by actress Mary McDonnell

Stern but fair

Eve was a doctor who oversaw the action at the emergency room of Clark Street Hospital, a fictitious hospital in the North Side area of Chicago, Illinois. Her father was also a doctor, and she felt like she had come into a zoo. In many ways, she was the newcomer on the block, but she managed to get the job done. Her relationships with the hospital administration was varied. The first administrator, John Harrison, who had known her father, was the one who initially hired her; the second administrator, and decidedly more silly, Harold Stickley (played by Jason Alexander) called her "Evie". She was sometimes critical of fellow doctor, Howard Sheinfeld for his lack of seriousness, and his sometimes breaching of doctor's protocol. She was equally hard on the rest of the staff, most notably, Joan Thor and her assistant, Julie Williams. She wasn't as strict with the ER's receptionist, Maria Amardo. Among other doctors, she got along well with hispanic Dr. Tomas Esquivel (played by actor Luis Avalos). However, she also had a caring side, which was hidden, sometimes, because she felt that she had to be efficient. She was worried that Howard worked so many hours and it seemed to her that it didn't benefit him one bit, especially when Howard told her that he was working such long hours because of the immense alimony he had to pay to two ex-wives. Howard and Eve were close friends, and good colleagues, despite their sometimes sparring in the emergency room. Even though she could get annoyed with Howard's lack of seriousness, she also realizes that his lack of seriousness can also be a breath of fresh air. She sometimes lets her hair down and allows herself to have fun when she can. One of the main reasons that she and Howard do get on, is because he respects her father, who was a doctor. Eve felt that there was a time and a place for everything, and she didn't like the fact that the emergency room was used as a singles bar; or a place for everyone to congregate. She also had to help deal with irate patients, and/or loved ones. However, when something really traumatic happened, she was there to help and comfort when it was called for. Eve did have a boyfriend, but he didn't last long, because the long hours and the amount of dedication she had to her job. He felt he was second place to her career, and never came back.
