Ernest Leslie "Ernie" Dickens (Born June 25, 1921 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a former National Hockey League (NHL) defenceman. Ernie Dickens had a 6 year NHL career, which would likely have been longer if not for him being called to service for Canada in World War II, causing him to miss much of three NHL seasons. In 1942, after 39 games with the Providence Reds of the AHL, Dickens was picked up by the Toronto Maple Leafs for 10 games where he scored two goals and two assists. He also played 13 playoff games, helping Toronto win the 1942 Stanley Cup championship. After the war, Dickens returned and again played for the Maple Leafs. In 1946, he played in 15 games. Dickens spent the following year in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets where he scored 11 goals and 40 assists in 64 games. Early in 1948 he was called up to play for the Chicago Blackhawks where he started in 54 games, scoring 5 goals and 15 assists. Ernie Dickens played 3 more full seasons with the Blackhawks, and while he proved to be a solid playmaker, he managed just four goals in 199 games. Perhaps feeling he wanted to prove he had some offensive capabilities, Dickens finished his professional hockey career with the Calgary Stampeders of the PCHL in 1951-52, scoring 14 goals and 34 assists for 48 points in 64 games.
