The Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD) is an independent school in Dallas, Texas.

Contents

History

The School was founded in 1974 by Dallas-area leaders and The Reverend Stephen B. Swann who remains the current headmaster. In 1995 ESD merged with St. Michael and now offers grades Beginner (age 3) through high school. The founders of the Episcopal School of Dallas envisioned a college-preparatory curriculum that would prepare students for a changing world, delivered within a framework of commitment to Judeo-Christian values. Central to this vision is a belief in the inherent worth of each child. This belief underlies every educational endeavor at the School and is expressed in the individualized teaching and the supportive learning environment that challenges students to strive for personal excellence. ESD has three campuses, including two in the North Dallas/Preston Hollow area and Wolf Run Outdoor Education Center, outside of Anna, Texas. The school originally only offered enrollment to grades 5 through 12.

Campus

ESD, located on three campuses, continues to develop, currently with 248,000 sq.ft. in facilities. The campus housing the Middle and Upper Schools is a former limestone quarry located on Midway Road and spans more than 39 acres. The first building, the gymnasium, was completed in the late 1970's. Classes were held in the gym until the main building was finished in 1981. A major expansion of the main building was completed in 1986. This expansion included a library, publication suite, fine arts facilities, classrooms and offices. The Cook Math and Science building was completed in 1994. It houses the science labs, math classrooms and two computer labs. All Saints Chapel was opened in 2003; previously, daily chapel had been held in the gym. The Frank Arts and Humanities Building opened in 2005. In addition to humanities classrooms and expanded music facilities, it offers a state-of-the-art proscenium theater, a black box theater, ceramic studio, and a darkroom/digital imaging suite. The latest additions to the Merrell Road campus are a 55,000 sq. ft. center for arts and humanities and a new stadium complete with state-of-the-art athletic turf, locker rooms, and accommodations for home and visiting fans. ESD's rural outdoor education center, located in northern Collin County, is on 165 acres. The plans for a new Wellness Center have almost been finalized, and basic construction has started.

Students

ESD has an enrollment of more than 1100 students, including nearly 400 in the High School. The school accepts students from a variety of faiths and backgrounds. While 100% of the students are college-bound, they represent a range of all aptitudes and skills. Graduates attend a variety of prestigious universities across the nation. Graduates of the 2006-2007 class plan to attend universities such as Dartmouth College, Northwestern University, University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, Stanford University, Vanderbilt University, Yale University, Washington and Lee University, University of Texas at Austin Plan II, College of Charleston, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Southern Methodist University.

Faculty

The Upper School has 65 full-time faculty members, 5 of whom has masters degrees. Of these, 3 also have doctorates, and 2 are doctoral candidates.

Stephen B. Swann

The Reverend Stephen B. Swann is the founding Rector and Headmaster of the Episcopal School of Dallas. He has been a member of the School's Board of Directors since its inception in 1974. A native of Texas, Father Swann received a Master of Divinity degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. He attended the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

Mission Statement

The Episcopal School of Dallas prepares young men and women for lives of intellectual discovery, integrity, and purpose. The School develops the unique talent and potential in each student and embraces sound learning, discipline, and faith as essential elements of an educated conscience.
