Background
In November 1992, Nunez and Martin's daughter had committed suicide; a year later Nunez contacted Telemundo to do an interview about his daughter's death. The interview was to take place at the cemetery where their daughter was buried.
Murder
His ex-wife arrived at the cemetery with reporter Ingrid Cruz and a cameraman who filmed Martin as she walked towards the cemetery. Suddenly, Nunez appeared with a gun and shot Martin twelve times in the head and torso, killing her. He did this because he blamed his ex-wife for their daughter's death. The murder was caught on tape, and the footage was used in the 2002 documentary Bowling for Columbine.
Aftermath
In 2000, Nunez was sentenced to life in prison, though he will be eligible for parole in 2025.
