Biography
Career
Page began acting at the age of ten, in a made-for-TV film (which would later be made into a series) called Pit Pony. This led to roles in a number of small Canadian films and television series. At age sixteen, she was cast in an independent film shot in Europe, Mouth to Mouth. Page played one of the main characters in the 2005 movie Hard Candy, and gained praise for "one of the most complex, disturbing and haunting performances of the year".[1] As the lead in 2007's critically acclaimed Juno, Page garnered substantial praise for her acting; one top critic noted her as being "frighteningly talented"[2] and Roger Ebert said, "Has there been a better performance this year than Ellen Page's creation of Juno? I don't think so."[3] Page has roles in four as yet unreleased films: An American Crime, based on the true story of Sylvia Likens, opposite Catherine Keener, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, The Tracey Fragments, which is scheduled for a U.S. release in early 2008, The Stone Angel, and Smart People, which will premiere at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
Personal life
Page was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Martha Philpotts, a teacher, and Dennis Page, a graphic designer.[4] She attended a number of Halifax area high schools including the Halifax Grammar School before graduating from the Shambhala School in 2005. Page has a wide variety of interests outside of acting. She often talks about her favourite books and music in interviews. She has said that she prefers roles that have her playing "whole female characters" and has little interest in playing roles which pander to the female stereotypes that are often found in films about young women today.[5] Page resides in her hometown of Halifax.
