Efficient (foaled 2003) is an Australian grey thoroughbred gelding racehorse, bred in New Zealand, who won the 2007 Melbourne Cup, with jockey Michael Rodd,[1] and the 2006 Victoria Derby.[2] Efficient was sired by Zabeel from the mare Refused The Dance. Efficient has had twelve starts for six wins and no placings. His prizemoney earnings are over AUD 4.2 million. Prior to the 2007 Melbourne Cup, Efficient had suffered from poor form following his win in the Victoria Derby in 2006, with five wins from six starts before the latter race.[3] He ran ninth in the 2007 Cox Plate, at Moonee Valley, ten days prior to the Melbourne Cup. His win dividend of $22.70 was the biggest for a Melbourne Cup winner in over ten years. He became the first grey to win the Melbourne Cup since Subzero in 1992. Efficient is trained by expatriate New Zealand trainer Graeme Rogerson, and owned by syndicate headed by Lloyd & Suzy Williams.[1] Efficient became the first horse since Phar Lap in 1930, to back up his Victoria Derby win with a win in the Melbourne Cup the following year.
