Edward Bishop Dudley born near Jacksonville, North Carolina, (15 December 1789 - 30 October 1855), Dudley was the two-term Whig governor of the U.S. state of North Carolina from 1836 to 1841. He served in the United States House of Representatives as a Jacksonian from 1829 to 1831. In 1836, Dudley became the first Governor of North Carolina elected by popular vote, after changes to the North Carolina Constitution came into effect. He defeated the incumbent Governor, Richard Dobbs Spaight, Jr., who had been the last governor elected by the state legislature.
