Edna is a city in Jackson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,899 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Jackson CountyGR6.

Geography

Edna is located at 28°58′36″N, 96°38′48″W (28.976550, -96.646568)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.9 square miles (10.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,899 people, 2,227 households, and 1,523 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,512.0 people per square mile (584.0/km²). There were 2,609 housing units at an average density of 668.7/sq mi (258.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 64.82% White, 13.65% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 17.48% from other races, and 2.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 31.17% of the population. There were 2,227 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 15.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.20. In the city the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. The median income for a household in the city was $29,000, and the median income for a family was $35,659. Males had a median income of $32,000 versus $19,079 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,193. About 18.5% of families and 20.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.7% of those under age 18 and 17.0% of those age 65 or over.

The City of Edna is served by the Edna Independent School District.

Trivia

  • Edna has not always been the county seat of Jackson County. Texana (now a ghost town covered by Lake Texana) was the county seat in the mid to late 1800s, until Edna got it.
