Edgar Jacob (1844-1920) was an English churchman, who became bishop of Newcastle and bishop of St Albans. He was born at the Rectory, Crawley, Hampshire on 16 November 1844. He was the fifth son of Philip Jacob, Rector of Crawley, Archdeacon of Winchester and Rural Dean, and Anna Sophia, eldest daughter of the Honble and Rev Gerard Thomas Noel, Vicar of Romney and Canon of Winchester. He was educated at Winchester College and at New College, Oxford, of which he was a scholar, matriculating in 1863. He obtained a first class in classical moderations in 1865 and a third class in literae humaniores in 1867, BA in 1868, MA in 187], DD by diploma in 1895 and Hon DD (Durham) in 1896. He was ordained priest in 1869 (Oxford), Curate of Witney 1869-1871; curate of St James's Bermondsey 1871-1872; domestic chaplain to Robert Milman, bishop of Calcutta 1872-1876; Commissary of Calcutta 1876-1888. He was examining chaplain to Harold Browne, bishop of Winchester 1876-1891; vicar of Portsea 1878-1896; Hon Canon of Winchester 1884-1896; Hon Chaplain to Queen Victoria 1887-1890; Chaplain in ordinary 1890-1896. He was Chaplain to Bishop Thorold of Winchester 1891-1895; to Bishop Davidson of Winchester 1896-1896; Rural Dean of Landport and Chaplain to HM Prison Kingston, Portsmouth 1892-1896; rector of Hants and Isle of Wight and select preacher at Oxford 1895-1896; He was Bishop of Newcastle 1896-1903, consecrated 25 January 1896. He was translated to St Albans in May 1903, where he remained as Bishop until 1919.
