Eden Baronets

There have been two Baronetcies created for the Eden family. In 1672 Robert Eden was created a Baronet, of West Auckland in the County of Durham, in the Baronetage of England. He later represented Durham County in Parliament. The second and fourth Baronet also represented this constituency in the House of Commons. The fifth Baronet assumed the additional surname of Johnstone. However, he died unmarried and is the only holder of the title to have used this surname. In 1776 Robert Eden was created a Baronet, of Maryland in North America, in the Baronetage of Great Britain. He was the second son of the third Baronet of West Auckland. The third Baronet of Maryland was killed at the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. His cousin, the fourth Baronet of Maryland, succeeded to the Baronetcy of West Auckland in 1844. The titles have remained merged.The present holder of the titles was given a life peerage as Baron Eden of Winton in 1983. Several other members of the Eden family have gained distinction. William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland (whose eldest son was created Earl of Auckland in 1839, a title which became extinct in 1849) was the third son and Morton Eden, 1st Baron Henley the fifth son of the third Baronet, of West Auckland. Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, was the third son of the seventh Baronet of West Auckland and the fifth Baronet of Maryland.
