du Maurier are a popular brand of cigarette, produced by Imperial Tobacco Canada, a subsidiary of British American Tobacco. The brand is named after Sir Gerald du Maurier, a British actor and manager. Imperial Tobacco Canada is not to be confused with the well known Imperial Tobacco The brand is also produced under license by the West Indian Tobacco Company in Trinidad and Tobago and is available in Regular, Light and Menthol. The cigarettes are available at Regular, Light, Extra Light, "Prestige" (lighter) and "Edition" (even lighter) nicotine/tar dosages. The packaging is red with the brand name and logo on the front and back of the package. Du Maurier also markets "Special" (baby-blue pack), "Avanti" and "Avanti Light" (slim, dark red pack) cigarettes. October 2006 saw a change in the Light du Maurier line. A new cigarette which utilizes an "AC", or Advanced Charcoal filter, was released in a limited distribution for only the Greater Toronto Area. The product is the first of any du Maurier cigarette to make use of charcoal filter-tip technology. It may also be worth mentioning that the filter is not the traditional orange-"cork"-colour, but instead is white. They are also available in regular (70 mm) and king size (84 mm); a 100 mm du Maurier has also been released. All styles of cigarette contain an equal quantity of tobacco, regular size have 3-4 millimetres smaller filter to compensate for the short size. King size and 100s make use of tobacco expanded using dry ice (see here for details of DIET process [1]). Regular cigarettes are popular in Canada; the nicotine hit appears to be more intense. In accordance with Health Canada's guidelines, 50% of the packaging depicts warnings of the consequences for human health from smoking tobacco as well as detailed instructions on how to quit smoking or reduce risks inside the package.
