He went on to captain the under-21 Australian side at the under-21 World Cup in Scotland. 2005 was a big year for Mitchell, in that, he finished the season as the Reds' leading tryscorer, scoring 11 tries in 12 games. That year, he also won his first Wallabies cap, scoring on debut against South Africa, as well as scoring a memorable try against the All Blacks in the Bledisloe Cup match. Mitchell officially announced that he had signed a three-year contract with the Western Force. This followed a period of speculation regarding his future, with the Brumbies also offering him a contract.[1] Mitchell was included in Australia's squad for the Rugby World Cup 2007. He made three appearances in the group stages scoring an amazing 7 tries including a hat-trick in the 55-12 win by Australia against Fiji.
