Dharma Productions is a film company founded by Yash Johar in 1976. The first film to be produced by the company was Dostana (1980) and went on to produce a few action films. In 1998, Mr. Johar's son Karan Johar made his directorial debut with the romantic film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film was one of the biggest hits of the year. Karan Johar went on to make the family dramas Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) both of which were hugely successful at the box office. Breaking away from the romantic or family drama genre, the company then produced the supernatural thriller Kaal in 2005. The latest release was the melodrama Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which released on August 11th, 2006. Recently, Dharma Productions and NDTV decided to jointly launch an entertainment television channel.
